COMLA 6 - CAM 1

Meaning of the Logo

The Argentinian Episcopal Conference and the Pontifical Missionary Works approved the logo for the Sixth Latin American Missionary Congress and First American Missionary Congress.

The colourful emblem encloses several symbolic elements, and above all it aims to emphasise the American image as the "Continent of Hope."

The meaning of each of its six components is the following:

The Boat:

Jesus called his first disciples, who where fishermen, and invited them to follow Him by saying: "I will make you fishers of men..." (Mt. 4: 18-19) For three years Jesus taught them to conduct another boat: the Church. After His death and resurrection, He appeared to his followers several times, and before going back to the Father, who had sent Him to save the world, he left His last recommendation, His testament, the compendium of His mission: "Go all over the world and preach the Good News to the whole creation." (Mk. 16:15).

The Boat in the Form of a Lamp:

It carries the American Continent with flames illuminating it. "You are the light of the world. Nobody lights a candle and puts it under a bushel, but on a candlestick so that it gives light to all those in the house" (Mt. 5:14-15). By Jesus’ command, the Church must bring the light of faith to all human beings. America has the responsibility to carry out this commandment.

The Water:

It symbolises Baptism, which introduces us into the Church, makes us children of God and followers of the mission commended to Christ, the First-born of the Father (John 3:5). This water that gives us the grace is the fountain of eternal life (John 4:7-13), by means of which we receive the divine gifts (John 4, 10) and the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:15).

Flames of Fire:

They remind us of the Holy Spirit, which in Pentecost descended upon the Apostles in the form of flames of fire (Acts 2:3) making them lose fear and preach God’s words with strength and courage.

They also remind us of Love, which joins Christians and makes of them a single body animated by the same Spirit; and of the blood of martyrs of yesterday and today, who in great number go on giving it and are persecuted for teaching and living evangelic values, defending the poor against injustice and exploitation.

The American Continent in Green:

The figure of the Continent has been coloured in green as a symbol of hope. America is repeatedly called: "The Continent of the missionary hope."

The Letters in Blue:

As Argentina is the seat of the Congress, the letters were drawn in light blue on a white background, like the Argentinian flag, which was hoisted for the first time in 1812 in Rosario, a city on the banks of the Paraná river. These colours are also worn by the Virgin under the names of Immaculate Conception of Luján, Patron Saint of Argentina, and as a coincidence, by the Virgin of Guadalupe, Patron Saint of America.
